The Church of Resurrection

In 1874, the church of Resurrection was built on the hill of Ermoupoli. A three-aisled, Byzantine-style church, it held a mass for the first time in 1880 and was inaugurated in 1908. It celebrates on the Sunday of St. Thomas.

The Church of the Transfiguration of Christ

This is the metropolitan Church of Syros built in 1824. Its architectural style is a three-aisled basilica with a dome. It was built by refugees from Chios and Psara. The bell of St. Nikolaos Psara is still preserved today, together with other relics brought to the island. An ecclesiastical museum operates next to the church.

St. Nicholas Church

Near Miaouli Square, the patron Saint Nikolaos dominates. A magnificent, imposing temple, it was founded in 1848 and inaugurated in 1870. The architectural style of the temple is a three-aisled basilica with a dome. In its interior, marble is dominant, and the icons are by the best hagiographers of the time.

St. George Church

It is a cemetery church of Ermoupoli that was built in 1833 and inaugurated in 1839. On the west side of the church, the Priestly School of Syros operated for several years.

The Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church

It was built in Ermoupoli in 1826-29 with features of marble and wood. The Pulpit, ‘Despotiko’, and ‘Vimothyra’ were made of wood or sheets of gold, and the entrance and iconostases of marble. The icon of 1826-29 that represents the “Adoration of the Virgin” painted by Dominicos Theotokopoulos (or El Greco) stands out. This icon found in 1983 has the artist’s signature.

Church of Almighty Taxiarches

It is located on Agou Georgiou Street leading to Ano Syros. It was built in the shape of a cross, with a dome in 1898. It has a marble iconostasis and an external bell tower built with a donation in 1908. The large icon of Taxiarches is a donation of the Patriarch of Jerusalem.

St. Dimitrios Church

The Church is near Ermoupoli, in the “Vaporia” area. In 1936, St. Dimitrios’ icon was found there, after a vision seen by the faithful Manousos Pelekis. The stone church was built in this location, in Byzantine style, with a dome. It is the first temple seen by visitors traveling by boat, and its bell always rings to either welcome or bid farewell to travelers.

St. Anargyron Church

Cross-shaped church, Byzantine style with a dome. It was built in 1862 in the Manna settlement.

St. Pavlos Church

We see the Saint near the “Captain Zafeiris Apostolos” military camp. The construction of the temple was completed in 1953.

St. Paraskevi Church

The Church is in the small settlement of Alithini Syros. It is a private church, built in 1600, in Byzantine style, with a dome.

St. Athanasios Church

The Church is near the “Fountain” of Ano Syros, with its tall, plane tree. The original church dates back to 1631. A larger church was built on its foundations in 1859 but collapsed unexpectedly in 1946. The stone church that still exists today was built in 1947.

St. Antonios Church

Near the sea, in Mega Gialos, is a cross-shaped church of St. Antonios with a dome. The Saint is celebrated on January 17.

St. Ioannis Church

It was built in Poseidonia in 1870 and dedicated to Timios Prodromos. The church is Byzantine style, cruciform with a dome, and its exterior is painted in sea colors.

Prophet Elias Church

It is a white Church in the Episkopeio dedicated to Prophet Elias the Thesvite. People assume that the first temple was built at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century. It is a single-aisled basilica church. It is in excellent condition, and inside it, we admire icons by the well-known artist Nestor Varveris.

St. Nicholas Church "of the Poor":

This is the oldest surviving church on the island. It was built in the 16th century in Ano Syros. It is single storey with a double roof. In the last century, the money was donated to support the Poor, with the aid of the Priestly Fund of Syros, for this reason, it is called “Saint Nicholas of the Poor”.

St. Eleftherios Church

It is a single-aisled church dating back to the 1900s, located near the Purgatory and the old Syros prisons. St. Eleftherios is the patron saint of prisoners and pregnant women, hence the many altars inside the church depicting babies.

The Church of The Holy Cross

St. Pakos or St. Ypakoi, St. Thekla, St. Stefanos (Galissa), Evangelistria (Ermoupoli), Jesuit monastery (Ano Syros), Panagia Karmilou (Ano Syros), St. George’ (Catholic Metropolis, Ano Syros), Faneromeni ( Chroussa)

St. Paku

On the hill of Galissa dominates the small church of St. Paku or St. Ypakoi. Visitors must walk the path and climb the steps to reach the white church with a beautiful view.

St. Stefanos

Noteworthy as it was built into the rocks by a fisherman to thank the Saint who saved him from the tentacles of an octopus. The church is in Galissa, and the visitor can reach it by walking the path or by boat.

Panagia Karmilou

Celebrates July 17 every year. The church served as a metropolitan church in the 17th century and is part of the Jesuit monastery complex.

St. George's Church

At the highest point of Ano Syros is the cathedral and parish Catholic Church of St. George. It was built between 1832-1834 and is the fifth church that was built and dedicated to St. George in this area. The first temple dates back to early Byzantine times.

Evangelistria

It is a parish church in the west of Ermoupolis, built with a donation from the merchant Grigorios Stefanos in 1829. Its architectural type is a three-aisled basilica.

St.Thekla

In Mega Gialo, near the main street, is the small church of St. Thekla.

The Jesuit Monastery

Founded in 1744 and completed in 1852-53 in Ano Syros. It is a historical monument of the island with a remarkable library. The Research Institute for Sustainable Development, Culture, and Tradition is now based there.
